a new declaration for the 5th of July

Yesterday in the U.S. was a holiday to mark the Declaration of Independence – the 4th of July. As I watched the beautiful fireworks over the Hudson River in Manhatten, a few words came to me that I’d like to share:

It’s a big day, this 4th of July
Here in the U.S.A – it got me thinking… why?

They say it marks the Declaration of Independence
I have to wonder – does this still make sense?

Here and now in global 2012
Is it right to be pushing the concept of ourselves?

Rather than it being all about me
Can we move to the more inclusive ‘we’?

Pushing others down to achieve progress
Doesn’t seem likely to deliver success

A life of separation only creates distrust
To move towards unity is now a must

Just as the wave is connected to the sea
You are wave/ ocean, just like me

When you rise up, you lift me too
If we all live this, imagine what we could do

So my preference from this day hence
A new Declaration of INTERdependence

Happy 5th of July!
